"An English Tea"

It is Pink Friday again!  This Friday's theme is "An English Tea"!  What fun an  English tea is!  I have been fortunate to have experienced proper English Tea in England.  Wonderful hot steaming cups of tea in beautiful cups and saucers accompanied by scones and clotted cream conjures up wonderful memories of time spent with friends in England.  I can still see in my mind's eye the table covered in crisp white battenburg linen, looking out their homes windows and see the English countryside rife with flowers and endless green lawn. Who ever said "Oh to be in England in the Spring" got it just right!

Teaching Your Kids The Importance of Giving Their Time

This weekend my youngest son and I worked with many other adults at a fundraiser for our local SPCA.  The SPCA is a cause very close to my heart.  In these hard economic times the first line of funraising to loose their donors is animal welfare.  Our local shelter is housed in it's original building that was contructed in the 1940's.  It is a sad little building that is full of very wonderful people on the front lines everyday trying to recue animals from terrible conditions.  Do you know that the first place that domestic abuse starts is with the family pet?  If we can stop animal abuse we are also stopping abuse moving on to children and spouses!
Well off my soap box and back to my son, Sterling.  For months now I have been  responsible for collecting antiques from antique dealers and private donors.  My 14 year old son has been helping me all the way with the pick ups in various towns in our county..(Did I mention that our SPCA is the one of only two shelters in our entire county? The second one is a satelite of our shelter.)  We have hauled boxes, cement birdbaths, furniture and all manner of heavy items to the chairpersons barn for storage until the big day.  Sterling has never complained once about why he had to do this.  Now of course, I am his mother and I believe he is special, but I have spent years with my sons picking up needed supplies such as rubbing alcohol or cat liter when I grocery shop.  On our way home the boys would go in and personally give these items to the ladies of the SPCA.  While in there they could hear the meowing and barking of the many dogs and cats housed there.  They loved going in and looking at the cats in their cages in the cinder block room with concrete flooring.  When I say loved, I mean that it opened their hearts to the condition animals, (that only need food and want love) can be faced with if they don't find these essentials. They have learned that being a pet owner means it is a responsiblilty that you do not take on lightly.  Once adopted, your pet is your responsibility for the rest of it's life.  Spaying and neutering to prevent any further kittens and puppies being born in this country is essential as we kill or if you prefer "put to sleep" FIVE MILLION cat and dogs every year!
Yesterday, I saw all those years of work with my youngest son come to completion.  I couldn't have been more proud of him as he lifted weed wackers, framed art work, dolls, couches and all kinds of antiques over his head for the audience to see as the auctioneer loudly called out the bids.
